1. Social
๐Students working in small groups have a tendency to learn more of what is taught and retain it longer than when the same material is presented in other instructional formats (Barkley, Cross & Major, 2005; rutgers.edu) Humans are, by nature, incredibly social creatures and language is our social tool, thus it is best learned in small groups which offer the opportunity to engage and still prove social pressures and dynamics. Studies show that students engaged in group work, or cooperative learning, show increased individual achievement compared to students working alone.
๐At a neurological level, we see ourselves as part of a groupย andย worry about the judgment of others. The underlying drive to be part of a group, to be recognized and appreciated by its members, and toย achieve high statusย among them can be a serious motivator when it comes to completing a task. Other studies suggest that group assignments do indeed directly improve an individualโs ability to learn and perform. โSocially shared cognitionโ and โtransactive memoryโ are benefits students only get by working in groups. Information discussed and delivered by friends and colleagues will beย more salientย than the same information delivered in a dull lecture while youโre struggling to stay awake.
๐For these reasons, the Business English Success Method delivers classes in small groups not exceeding 7 students.
2. Relevant Content
๐The content for our course is selected not only because of the business English content but also for the leading industry ideas, concepts, and knowledge it provides in any language.
๐Business English students need to learn the words, phrases, strategies, concepts, and mind sets that are being utilized by business leaders in the English speaking world.
๐The course material will teach you English while at the same time growing your business acumen, knowledge, skills, and job performance in every language you do business.
๐Becoming familiar with these texts is essential for business English performance because speech perception comes before speech production. Our course gives you the opportunity to be exposed to these ideas and then a controlled environment to begin talking about them in a higher level setting.
3. Communicative
๐80 percent of the course is communicative, based on inductive learning, presented in a communicative context, and based on business situations with group and break out rooms for activities and language utilization for specific targeted tasks. Intermediate and advanced learners need to focus on communication triggering the subconscious to think in English.
๐20% of the course is deductive, meaning the language is presented structurally, in a formal presentation while grammar and rules are tested and corrected. In the case of intermediate and advanced students these activities should not be completely ignored but may be considered optional.
4. Corrective & Tested
๐For intermediate and advanced business English students the goal is no longer simple language production but instead quality language production and fluency. As a result, students need to be corrected when mistakes occur. Mistakes and correction in a small group of peers experiencing similar challenges results in inherent social dynamics which increase learning outcomes and produce better results for each individual student.
๐Course material is sporadically and comprehensively tested to signal to the mind that acquired information is not to be stored in short term memory banks, but needs to be retained for continued utilization. For example, concepts and language learned in week 2 appears in tests for the remainder of the course.
